In Italy most of the crimes are committed within the family: if in the past there was a murder every three days, last year there was one every two days. In most cases, the authors of these crimes are husbands, ex-boyfriends or people related to the family.
In Italy, family violence kills more than mafia. What is more surprising is that the North leads the ranking, followed by the South, and finally by the Centre. Lombardy holds the sad record of crimes in family. The main victims of these types of murders are women, followed by children, the elderly and men.
Cogne, Teramo and Avetrana are just some of the Italian towns which became sadly famous for cases linked to this type of murder. And Samuele, Melania Rea and Sarah Scazzi are just some names of the long list of victims of family violence.
In the last years, Italy has faced a wave of domestic homicides, but which are the reasons that lead a person to be guilty of a similar offense? According to what statistics report, the motives are often jealousy, non-resignation to the separation or abandonment, unrequited love, honor killings and mental disturbances.
So, from a behavioral point of view, there are two different reactions: social isolation or aggression towards the person held responsible for the sense of frustration and failure. This discouragement is often due to misconceptions transmitted, for example, by mass media or because of the dominant culture. Think of the “Werther effect”. The same is for the murders: the more the media talks about them, the more the murders are. Is it true?
